Welcome to the Science Summit at UNGA76, a major contribution to advancing Science for the UN SDGs. Online from 14- September - 5 October 2021.
ISC will organise the second edition of the UNGA76 Science Summit around the 76th United Nations General Assembly (SSUNGA76) in September 2021. The objective of the virtual meeting will be to raise awareness of the role and contribution of science to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It will demonstrate initiatives that provide models for global science mechanisms and activities in support of the SDGs, particularly in science infrastructure and capacity building. Science is and will enable sustainable economic, environmental, and societal development. Science is more than a funding prioritisation exercise: science is impacting all areas of policy-making and is playing a more critical role in how policy objectives are achieved and the consequent benefit to people everywhere, including responses to global challenges.
Engagement with policy leadership is more important than ever: UNGA76 is a unique forum for science to demonstrate how policy and political leadership can benefit from innovation. Central to this is the role of nonstate actors and the multilateral fora, which increasingly determine how priorities are set. Science needs to be part of this dialogue and inform outputs through thought leadership, evidence, insights, analysis, and innovation.

I am a Professor of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics with over 30 years of research and teaching experience. I began my teaching career with the College of Education, Benin, where I rose to the position of a senior lecturer and Dean of the School of Sciences. I then joined the Department of Zoology, University of Benin (later renamed Department of Animal and Environmental Biology) as a lecturer and rose to the rank of a Professor of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics in 2007.
I have developed and managed an active research team supported by analytical (GC, HPLC and AAS) capabilities and comprised of seasoned researchers in various aspects of risk assessment and pollution studies.

As one of the foremost Ecotoxicologist in Nigeria, my research interest spans across Environmental Toxicology and Forensics. I have published over a hundred (100) scientific papers in local and international journals in Heavy Metals, Industrial Chemicals and Pesticide Pollution Studies, Ecological Risk Assessment, Bio-Marker/Endocrine Disruption Mechanism, and Fish/Amphibian Toxicology.

The strides made in my research has attracted have several academic recognitions and scholarships. Amongst which are the 1994 NEST/FORD Foundation Research Awardee, 1997/98, World Bank sponsored Population Research Fund Project Awardee, 1998, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) sponsored Research Awardee 2001, UNDP sponsored Research Awardee 2003, National University Commission (NUC)Research Grant Awardee 2003 and 2006 IPEP/UNIDO project consultant on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Nigeria.

My research team has also been awarded the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency’s (ECREEE’s) and ECOWAS Renewable Energy Facility (EREF) Project Award (2012). I have also been a recipient of the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) travel grant for the International Toxicology Symposium in Africa. I was awarded the 2014/2016, TETFUND institution-based research grant to carry out research on Integrative monitoring and probabilistic modelling of heavy metal and pesticide residues in selected Rivers in Southern Nigeria.

As an Environmental Consultant, I have consulted for World Bank, UNESCO, WWF, UNDP, UNIDO, and multi-national oil companies such as SPDC, Mobil plc, and Agrip PLC. I am currently an Environmental and waste management consultant to Projects in Delta, Enugu, Abuja area municipal Council (AMAC), Lagos and the Bayelsa State of Nigeria.

My professional affiliation includes member of the society for Environmental toxicology and chemistry (SETAC) Europe was in 2005 was granted a spotlight” presentation at the 15th Annual Conference at Lille, France, Adviser/member West African Society of Toxicology (WASOT), Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) amongst others. I am currently the National President of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) in which I am also a Fellow and a Fellow of Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (SESN).

As an aggressive advocate of Renewable Energy Deployment and a Clean Environment, I have presented over fifty (50) brilliant papers at both local and international fora on Renewable Energy and Environment.
I am currently one of the Nigerian representatives on the World Energy Council (WEC), UK study team on Energy Resources and Policy Assessment, a contributing author of the World Energy Trilemma 2013, and The Grand Transition of World Energy Scenarios 2016 documentation of WEC. A former National Focal Point with African Energy Commission (AFREC).

A member of the Nigerian delegation to the 21st World Energy Congress, 2010, Montreal, Canada. Member Nigerian Energy Delegation to Canada, 2011, (Montreal, Quebec Province, Winnipeg Manitoba Province, Calgary & Edmonton, Alberta Province, Vancouver, British Colombia Province, Toronto and Ottawa), member of the Nigerian delegation to 2011 World Energy Council Executive Assembly, Oran, Algeria. I was one of the country’s representatives to the Executive Assembly of the World Energy Council held in Monaco, France in 2012. I was also a member of the Nigerian delegation to the 22nd World Energy Congress (WEC), 2013, Daegu, Korea.

My administrative contributions to my catchment area include appointment as member of the Governing Council, College of Education, Ekiadolor, Benin, (1999-2002), Board member of Bendel Insurance Football Club, President Crescent sports club (2003-2006), President Senior Staff club (2004-2006), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) the University of Benin, Nigeria (2014-2016) and member of several University Adhoc, standing, and statutory committees.
